MALE, September 25 (HNS) – Education Ministry today transferred teachers at the government-aided preschools in capital Male to Male City Council.

Under the Decentralisation Act, 135 teachers were transferred to the council from the preschools in the four wards of Male, Hulhumale preschool, Villimale preschool and Falah Preschool.

Education Minister Shifa Mohamed said the council would provide salaries to the teachers from its budget despite the fact that the ministry will continue to devise policies and supervision.

All the preschools in the atolls have already been handed over to the relevant councils, she added.

Shifa stressed that the decision would facilitate in managing the schools more efficiently in collaboration with the guardians of the students.

“The preschools in Maldives aren’t functioning under an established system. Several actions need to be taken in order to establish such a system. I believe the council will be able to manage the preschools in a more efficient manner. But such a change would take something like four years,” she said.

An agreement was signed today by Minister Shifa and Male Mayor Maizan Ali Manik to transfer the teachers to the council.
