Former President Mohamed Nasheed has also stressed that the best interest of the nation must come ahead personal affairs.
While speaking at the inauguration ceremony held to launch the RaajjeTV website, Nasheed has echoed the same statement made by President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik who at the Independence Day reception had called on to put national interest ahead of personal affairs.
At the ceremony held on Thursday night at Nasandhura Palace Hotel, Nasheed urged to give precedence to national interest over personal interest and called on President Waheed to take part in the All Party Roadmap Talks in order to reform the political strife in the country. Nasheed conveyed his “sincere” request to President Waheed to participate in the all party negotiations with Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and other political parties.
Nasheed urged his successor to expedite and facilitate the process for early elections to ensure that the leader is elected through the votes of the people. He also called on the President to resolve the current political situation peacefully.
Contrary to Nasheed’s request to his successor, MDP Spokesperson and Maafannu-north MP Imthiyaz 'Inthi' Fahmy had said earlier that President Waheed was not deemed essential to the political parties' talks.
“MDP does not deem Dr Waheed as important to the All Party Talks. He doesn’t even belong to a party that meets the necessary number of members’ criteria. He doesn’t even command a single seat in Parliament. That’s the situation he faced in the council elections. Hence he is not important for the sit-down between the political parties,” he detailed.
Meanwhile government spokesperson Abbas Adil Riza had said that the President would only consider the offer if the MDP denounces violence and unrest during its ongoing series of “Direct Immediate Action” protests. He added that President Waheed will only participate in the talks if all parties agree to the sit-down.
“Political parties had suggested that they would not take part in negotiations at gun point. The first issue on the agenda of the talks is to create a smooth and peaceful atmosphere” Abbas said.
