The government has described the report published by former President Mohamed Nasheed administration Housing Minister Mohamed Aslam and former National Security Advisor Ameen Faisal as an act of terrorism.
Government spokesperson Abbas Adil Riza told Haveeru today that the ultimate intention of the report is to “intimidate” members of the security forces.
“The ultimate goal of the whole report is to intimidate the enforcement authorities including the police and Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF). This is an unjust report. It doesn’t have any basis” Abbas said.
He said that threatening the enforcement authorities is a crime and that an investigation must be launched by the authorities to catch these perpetrators.
“It is an unlawful act. We condemn the act by Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) to intimidate the enforcement authorities. This is a cowardly act.” Spokesperson said.
Abbas also responded to the statement by MDP calling for President Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik to resign immediately as it believes that the timeline by the Commission of National Inquiry (CNI) of the events leading up to the transfer of power on February 7 indicates his involvement in the ‘coup’.
“The decision will be made by the commission. The timeline published at the moment is not its final report. The commission’s final report will reveal how the transition of the government had taken place,” Abbas said.
He said that former President Mohamed Nasheed had carried out illegal activities during his term in office and that these issues need to be addressed as well.
“A President disobeying Supreme Court orders must be impeached. Many similar incidents had transpired,” Spokesperson said.
