President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik has abolished the seven National Offices and the National Office Units established in the seven regions of the Maldives.

The National Offices were abolished to facilitate the decentralisation of islands and atolls, as stated in the Chapter 8 of the Constitution and the Decentralisation Act.

In a statement issued by the President’s Office it was stated that the following the abolishment of National Offices, the functions of the Offices would be transferred to the local councils under agreements with the councils.

This was done according to the statement to shorten the process of matters and reaching the ministry allowing for more effective administration as direct contact is facilitated.

The Home Ministry had previously stated that the almost 150 workers working in these National Offices and its units should not fear for their jobs as the Ministry would attempt to secure their jobs through dialogue with the Civil Service Commission (CSC).
