The Special Forces team of the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) today arrived in Gan of Addu City for the upcoming SAARC Summit.
The élite combat team of the armed forces travelled to Gan in an Indian Air Force aircraft.
The team's Commander, Lieutenant Colonel Ahmed Giyas said the team would begin its operations in Addu today.
"We'll be operating in southern area to participate in Operation Dolphin SAARC Summit. Our primary task is to handle the security of all the VVIPs who would attend the summit and to carry out counter-terrorism operations," he said.
Giyas stressed that special training programmes have been conducted in the Maldives and abroad for the élite combat team involved in SAARC Summit security.
"We've been preparing for the summit since a long time. We've carried out joint training programmes with the Special Forces personnel of the US Army," he said.
"God willing, nothing will get out of our hands. We'll carefully carry out our operations."
The Special Forces team is to work under the instructions of the SAARC Summit Taskforce and the Southern Area Command.
