Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) is to increase Male port charges by 15 percent commencing next month.

In a statement, the company said yesterday that the decision was made in order to establish a mechanism that would provide sustainable services from the Male Commercial Harbour.

The company, however, is to cut the fuel surcharge.

MPL began collecting the fuel surcharge last year for tug rentals and salvage, towage, port clearance transport, pilotage, stewarding, handling, wharfage, equipment hire and container reshipping. The fuel surcharge was also taken from the express service charge and fee taken for waste disposal.

MPL has not revised the port charges since their introduction in 1992.
