Lanka fishing vessel captured in Maldives

Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) had been alerted to a Sri Lankan fishing vessel inside the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of the Maldives tonight.

MNDF stated that information had been recieved that the vessel had been spotted 26 miles off Seenu Atoll Gan around 8.00 this evening.

The Southern Area Coast Gaurd has now taken control of the vessel, MNDF added.

"The vessel was spotted about 36 nautical miles off the east of Seenu Atoll Gan. The coast guard has now taken control over the vessel," MNDF media officer First Lieutenant Abdulla Ali said.

This is the third ocassion in about two weeks where the MNDF had been alerted to foreign vessels inside Maldivian territorial waters.
