The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has decided that the only eligible candidate for the upcoming internal election of the party to choose a chairperson is current interim-chairperson and Hulhu-Henveiru MP Moosa 'Reeko' Manik.
The party revealed today that the decision was taken at a meeting held yesterday by the Appeals Council of the Party.
The council had invalidated the form submitted in the name of Nolhivaram MP and party member Mohamed ‘Colonel’ Nasheed, who claims he did not submit a form, and also because the application which requires 300 signatures of party members who supports him was incomplete.
It was disclosed the Moosa had submitted more than 900 forms signed by party members pledging their support to him, all of them valid while only 97 valid forms were submitted under Nasheed’s name some of which were doubles of the same copy.
The council is also investigating Nasheed’s claim that someone else had applied to contest using his name. Nasheed had said that he had not been interested in contesting for the position and that someone had forged his name on the form.
