Two Maldivian nationals were arrested by the Sri Lankan police on Monday (April 30) for allegedly harassing passengers and crew members on a flight which had been returning to Colombo from Bangkok.

A senior police officer speaking to Haveeru said that the two Maldivian nationals had been intoxicated at the time they had boarded the Sri Lankan Airlines flight in Bangkok.

“As soon as they boarded the aircraft they were reported to have been consuming alcohol in the flight. Some of the passengers had complained that the two Maldivian nationals had been verbally harassing few of the passengers. While the aircraft had taken flight, the two had begun to continue with their harassment of passengers,” he said.

He said that the two Maldivian nationals had even tried to manhandle the cabin crew and few passengers while onboard the flight.

“When they were behaving in such a manner the cabin crew had warned the two to calm themselves down,” he said.

Once the flight had landed in the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA), the two Maldivian nationals were taken into custody by the Sri Lankan Airport police.

The two Maldivian Nationals who have been identified as Hanif Mushaf and Washeed Ibrahim are expected to be produced before a Magistrate today (May 1).

Sri Lanka’s Ministry of External affairs said that the Maldivian High Commission in Colombo has been notified of the issue.
