Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has stressed that the party does not function through the influence of former President Mohamed Nasheed and there was nothing that can be done if his popularity within the party is deemed as his influence.

The party further refuted claims by the recently ousted MDP Vice President and Feydhoo constituency MP Alhan Fahmy who had been removed through a no confidence motion by the party's National Congress that MDP runs on the influence and whims of the former President.

MDP Spokesperson and Maafannu-South constituency MP Imthiyaz 'Inthi' Fahmy stressed that Nasheed does not influence the way MDP functions through intimidation or duress.

Inthi claimed that there was nothing Nasheed could have done in the removal of both Alhan and MDP President Dr Ibrahim Didi through the no confidence motion of its Congress.

He further said that he could not understand the basis of the accusations that MDP operates by the influence of a single individual.

To that end, Inthi said that he believed that influence is classified as bribery or intimidation and stressed that no such actions had ever come to pass within MDP.

"Sometimes I also hear that Nasheed's influence is intense. If the popularity of a person is declared as influence, then there is nothing we can do about that. Even if the popularity of Alhan or Didi increases, there would be nothing we can do about it either," Inthi detailed.

He also said that in order to become a political leader one needs to be popular which is one of the most important qualities that a political leader must possess.

Inthi added that Nasheed had always worked tirelessly for the future of MDP.

MDP further countered the questions raised with regard to the democracy within the party.

Inthi claimed that no political party in the Maldives was as democratic as MDP.

The various bodies within the party is established and members are elected through democratic elections.

"Is there any party in this country that elects its President and Vice President like we do? The people to these posts are elected through polls open for all members of the party. The other parties would convene one of its councils and raise a hand in vote," Inthi explained.

Following his removal as the VP of MDP, Alhan has claimed that Nasheed runs the party from his private residence, Kenereege.

He further accused that the elected members of the MDP leadership had no control or authority over the functioning of the party.
