Police have requested the Maldives Broadcasting Commission to look in to the issue of RaajjeTV broadcasting news that the former Head of Police Intelligence Department, Mohamed Hameed had called for the resignation of Police Commissioner Abdulla Riyaz.

Police media official said that none of the police officers had heard Hameed call for the resignation of the Commissioner and that RaajjeTV had spread news of Hameed’s arrest on Wednesday while nothing of the sort had happened.

“We have submitted it as two separate issues. The news about Hameed’s arrest and the news about the resignation call on the Police Commissioner. These are untrue. The police believe that these had been a deliberate attempt to disrupt the peace of the institution” he said.

Maldives Police Service (MPS) has said that the former police intelligence head, Chief Superintendent of Police Mohamed Hameed was arrested today, on suspicion of providing confidential information to a report published by two prominent members (Former National Security Advisor Ameen Faisal and former Housing Minister Mohamed Aslam) of opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) about the events leading up to the transfer of power on February 7.

A statement by MPS on Wednesday, under the right to freedom of expression, it urged all parties to refrain from disseminating fabricated information and urged the media to clarify such information through the police.
