President discusses Somalis deportation

President Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik has discussed with the foreign minister of Somalia to deport the Somalis who had drifted in to Maldivian waters on various occasions.

In a news conference held on Wednesday at Ibrahim Nasir International Airport (INIA) after concluding his visit to Brazil to attend the Rio+ summit, President Waheed said that there are about 40 Somalis in the Maldives at the moment and that he had held discussions with the Somali foreign minister in Dubai on deporting them.

Waheed acknowledged that he looked forward to reaching an agreement on the issue between the two countries.

The Somalis who had drifted in to Maldivian waters on various occasions had been kept in jail. Somalis who are notorious for its pirates, occasionally end up in Maldivian waters.
