Government Spokesperson Abbas Adil Riza has said that despite Maldivian Democratic Party's (MDP) claims that it would not cease the ongoing protests until the government is deposed, President Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik has not committed any act that warranted the overthrow of his administration.

Countering the statement made by MDP spokesperson Imthiyaz ‘Inthi’ Fahmy, Abbas claimed that President Waheed’s government would end only if he resigned and that scenario would only be prompted if the President violates the laws governing this nation.

To that end, Abbas stressed that the President had not issued any illegitimate orders thus far.

Speaking at a press conference held at the party’s office last night Inthi had said that the “Direct Immediate Action Campaign” started by the party will not end and that the continuous demonstration carried out with no regard for “rain or shine” will only end with the downfall of the current government or with an agreement for an early election.

Spokesperson further added that the circumstances under which President Waheed would be required to tender his resignation is yet to come to pass.

“That can only happen if President Waheed issues illegal orders or violates the laws. But the President is yet to commit such an atrocity,” Abbas added.

He also claimed that the main reason behind former President Mohamed Nasheed’s resignation was the repeated illegal orders he had issued to the security forces.

Abbas alleged that MDP does not wish to cooperate with the work of the Commission of National Inquiry (CNI) set up by President Waheed to probe the circumstances surrounding the transfer of power on February 7. He added that MDP has continued to stymie and defame the Commission.

“Their true identity is being revealed to the whole world,” Abbas concluded.
