Gender Minister Fathimath Dhiyana Saeed's official car has been torched on Wednesday after midnight.

Police official stated that the car had been torched while it was parked at Usfasgandu area near Dharubaaruge after the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) protest held at Chandhanee magu was dispersed. Police say that there have been no arrests made so far and that the investigation is ongoing.

Dhiyana told Haveeru that she is very concerned by such acts.

“What is of most concern is that they (MDP) did this after saying that they would torch the whole country. And I’ve heard that there were people clapping and applauding as the car was burning. Destroying people’s property should be something heartrending,” Dhiyana said.

MDP spokesperson Imthiyaz ‘Inthi’ Fahmy said that the MDP members did not torch Dhiyana’s car and that the party’s members would not partake in such activities.

“That could be something Dhiyana did to get a new car. Police and the armed forces use excessive force against people. Hence it should be a small thing for them to destroy someone’s property,” Inthi accused.

While Dhiyana’s car was torched, police barricades were also set ablaze as police dispersed the MDP protesters last night.
