Opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has called on for the immediate release of Aminath Shauna, President of the party's Youth Wing and Deputy Chair of the party's Media Committee, who was arrested yesterday, during the ongoing 'Direct Action' protest.

It was claimed in a statement issued by the party that Shauna had been arrested with excessive force while demonstrating peacefully. MDP had condemned her arrest on the grounds that it is in violation of the rules and regulations.

A Police media official also confirmed today that Shauna is still under arrest and that she was arrested because she had obstructed the Police from carrying out their responsibility.

MDP had also called for the release of other MDP members arrested over the span of the protest while the Police has stated that those who are detained can only be released under the set policy within the legal boundaries.

The official said that anyone obstructing the Police from carrying out their duty will be arrested in the future as well.
