Parliament's Finance Committee Wednesday sanctioned the release of MVR21 million from the contingency budget to sustain the running of the State.

While the authorization had been given to access the MVR150 million contingency budget at the Finance Ministry, request for additional clauses for the right to use finances from the budget has also been made.

The contingency budget has been divided into three parts which include salary, general and PSP contingency with MVR50 million allocated for each category.

Nolhivaram constituency MP Mohamed Nasheed detailed that the request for additional clauses to use the contingency budget had been made to access the funds in order to cover the important expenses required to run the State.

“That’s why to prevent the stalling of the State, MVR21 million has been released yesterday. The request for authorization to use the contingency budget for other purposes have been made as expenses such as Ramadan allowance and utilities companies bills need to be covered. Some health care expenses also need to be covered,” Nasheed said.

Nasheed explained that MVR106 million remained from the MVR150 million contingency budget. He added that the authorization to use the funds for other purposes can only be given after the relevant detailed documentations are submitted.

Meanwhile, Auditor General Niyaz Ibrahim had proposed to abolish the contingency budget citing that its availability could lead to the exploitation of State funds.
