Pro-government Progressive Party of Maldives has called on the Elections Commission to take strict actions against the parties that promotes and incites violence and attacks on police officers.

During a press conference held by the party, Parliamentary Group member and Villimaafannu constituency MP Ahmed Nihan alleged that the activities and the speeches made by prominent officials of opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) encouraged criminal offences. Nihan further criticized the Elections Commission for failing to act on such transgressions by MDP.

“MDP’s leader and former President Mohamed Nasheed himself is calling on the people to take to the streets to confront the police. Also MDP MPs and general members on various events have publicly intimidated police and military officers. They have even declared rewards on social networking sites for anyone who reveals names and numbers of police personnel. Hence when the situation has gone to this extent, simply condemning the action won’t suffice. I call on the Elections Commission to take strict action against such acts,” Nihan condemning the stabbing murder of a police officer in Kaafu Atoll Kaashidhoo last night stressed.

He further said that the attacks on people’s rights, lives and property were being carried out in the veil of political parties and democracy.

Nihan stressed that he did not hold MDP directly responsible for the death of the police officer, but noted that anyone engaging in actions to incite such behavior and violence would be accused in the resulting crime.
