Police Commissioner Abdulla Riyaz today alleged that police officers are being harassed, taunted and attacked by opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) with former President Mohamed Nasheed at the helm.
During a press conference held today, both Riyaz and Home Minister Dr Mohamed Jameel Ahmed condemned the recent increase in attacks on police officers as a direct result of hate mongering against law enforcement authorities.
Police Commissioner further noted that MDP had made baseless accusations against individual police officers claiming that the police had violated the laws during the regime change on February 7. Riyaz added that MDP were constantly calling on to attack police officers and their families after creating hatred in the hearts of the people against the police institution.
He stressed that false claims and actions against the police entrusted with the task of maintaining law and order is a clear violation of the principles of democracy.
“I also want to point out that Raajje TV has continuously broadcast blatant lies and fabricated reports to undermine the integrity and professionalism of the police in a bid to create hatred and mistrust in the police institution,” Riyaz said.
Commissioner also noted that 64 police officers had been hurt during the violence on February 8, while the damages to property amount to over MVR1.3 million.
While noting the investigations into incitements to attacks against police officers, Riyaz shed light on one such case. As one case, he detailed that former President Nasheed calling on to attack the police are being probed, while MP Mariya Ahmed Didi had been summoned to provide a statement in relation to the case.
During the press conference, Home Minister Jameel reiterated Police Commissioner Riyaz’s statement while adding that some were engaged in unrelenting efforts to create hatred against the Police with baseless accusations. Jameel said that efforts to tarnish the law enforcements authorities had begun on February 8.
He further expressed disappointment in provoking such attacks that physically harmed police officers. Home Minister also added that the exaggerated and false reporting by Raajje TV had led to the increase of such attacks on police officers, while accusing the station of disrupting the harmony and peace of the entire nation.
Home Minister stressed that false claims intended to create hatred in the minds of the people against the police would not be tolerated and pledged action against all those who make such attempts.
