Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has alleged that the United Nations Human Rights Committee had issued the report on Maldives following the pressures of opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
During a press conference held yesterday, PPM Spokesperson and Galolhu-south constituency MP Ahmed Mahloof further alleged that the report was very much in favor of a specific party and MDP had pressured for a UN Committee to issue such a report.
Mahloof described the UN report as serious and concerning. To that end he strongly condemned the UN’s calls to allow same sex rights and religious freedom in the Maldives. The MP said that the calls cannot be heeded by the Maldives and added that the report had further worsened the present strife in the country.
Mahloof also alleged that MDP together with associated international parties had worked towards undermining the sovereignty and eradicating Islam from the Maldives. He added that persons such as the former Foreign Minister Dr Ahmed Shaheed had influenced international bodies.
“I’m truly disappointed that a Council of the stature of the UN would issue such a report. This is something we cannot oblige to even if the UN or EU asks. Even if this report is issued one year later, the outcome would remain the same. We cannot compromise our religion,” Mahloof said.
He said that the call to investigate the allegations of human rights abuses prior to 2008 was directly associated to former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s government. Mahloof pointed out that former President Mohamed Nasheed during his tenure had established a Presidential Commission for the same purpose which had yielded no result as the Commission had failed to determine any violations.
“Even Ibrahim Nasir had been President earlier. Large numbers had been subject to torture during that era as well. Hence a call to probe a period associated with Gayoom’s government is questionable,” he said.
Mahloof while noting that some of the issues raised by the Committee were commendable, most of the issues can never be politically or religiously acceptable.
