Man arrested for assault on Police officer

Police have arrested a man who allegedly had assaulted and busted the nose of a Police officer during the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) protest last night.

Police revealed that a 21 year old suspect had been taken into custody under a court order, but did not disclose any further details. Last night Police had even raided Usfasgandu area around 1.00 used by MDP to hold its political activities to make the arrest. But the suspect had been arrested one around an hour later from a different location.

“He wasn’t arrested from Usfasgandu. Additional details will be disclosed later,” Police media official Sub Inspector Hassan Haneef said.

Police website detailed that the Police officer had been assaulted near Fareedhee Magu Novelty Bookshop while in plain clothes. The officer had been attacked by one of the protesters at the MDP protest, according to Police.

“The Police officer was assaulted at a time when there has been an upsurge in various confrontations and attacks on Police personnel and property. In addition the assault has come at a time when a Police officer was brutally stabbed to death recently,” Police website added.

Police had also raided Usfasgandu area this morning under a court order, alleging that documents were posted all over the area that incited violence against the Police.
