Opposition television station Raajje TV transmission has been interrupted throughout the Maldives after its control room was broken into and cables severed.

Deputy CEO of Raajje TV Abdulla Yamin said that it is believed that the perpetrators had entered the control room after forcing the electronic locking system of the building. The damage inflicted on the cables has suspended the station’s programs.

“The severed cables also include ones that aren’t even available in the Maldives,” Yamin said.

It is also believed that perpetrators were well familiarized with the building as the power had been cut from the Raajje TV floor prior to the break in, according to Yamin.
Yamin further revealed that the incident had been reported to the Police and a forensic team had combed through the scene. He added that repair work on the severed cables can commence once the Police concludes the search for evidence.

“We are striving to resume transmission during the next 24 hours,” he said.

Yamin stressed that the people or purpose behind the attack is yet unknown, but revealed that the cables had been severed at a time when the station have been subject to various threats.
