A man has died after a boat carrying cargo to a developing resort capsized and sank this morning.
Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) revealed that the boat loaded with cargo which left from Male to Noonu Atoll Fushivelavaru had capsized due to bad weather around 5.30 this morning while trying to unload some of the cargo to another vessel.
The victim's body was discovered underwater during an operation after one of the crew members was missing. The boat sank near Fushivelavaru, according to MNDF.
MNDF official revealed that the victim was a expatriate who‘s body was discovered around 9.15 this morning. The victim had been trapped inside the boat which was around 50 meters beneath the surface.
Official detailed that two out of the three crew members on the vessel were rescued shortly after it had sunk and added that the body of the victim had been handed over to the Police.
“We contacted the owner of the boat and we will retrieve it. But as the vessel is too far underwater we cannot begin efforts right away,” official said.
Manager of the resort Mohamed Hassan said that the resort was unaware of the details of the incident or the vessel as cargo delivery had been awarded under a bidding process.
