Interim Vice President of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) Umar Naseer has explained the reason behind his summoning to Police today as the rivalry between the political parties of the coalition government.
Speaking to the media after giving his statement to the Police this morning, Umar detailed that he had been summoned following claims made by him during the December 23 Coalition protest on January 23 at the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) area.
“My speech had mentioned climbing over a place using a ladder. I had been questioned over the matter even earlier. Even this time I was questioned over the same case. I told them that the ladders have now been damaged due to nonuse,” Umar detailed.
Umar, who had also been summoned to the Police over the same matter during former President Mohamed Nasheed’s administration, did not disclose any further details with regard to the case.
The first time round Umar had refused to answer any questions, asked the police to disclose the case numbers of those filed against him and the status of the investigations pertaining to the cases. The police had failed to respond to his requests and ended the session without much further queries stating that he would be informed if his presence was required, Umar had said.
He further alleged that a political motive was behind his summoning due to the rivalry between the parties in the government. However, he did not add anything further to his allegation.
