During the ongoing visit to New York, President Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik has met with the United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Sunday. This is the first meeting of President Waheed with the Secretary-General after the Commission of National Inquiry (CNI) report.
“Today I met with UNSG Ban Ki-moon. Now that the transfer of power has been proven legitimate, he said it is time to move forward with the nation,” President Waheed wrote on his official twitter account on Sunday.
There has been no detail of the meeting through the President’s office and the foreign ministry as of now.
The foreign ministry had earlier stated that the President would hold meetings and discussions on strengthening the bilateral agreements with international organizations and bodies. President Waheed is scheduled to address the UN General Assembly on two occasions, including the general session of the Assembly and the high-level meeting on the rule of law.
"I will focus my address on the present treatment of smaller nations and special efforts to maintain independence and sovereignty of such nations. I will also touch on the way Maldives was treated by some of the larger countries," President had said earlier.
