Parliament's Ungoofaaru constituency MP Dr Afrasheem Ali has been stabbed to death early this morning.

It is believed that Afrasheem had been stalked and stabbed to death near his residence after he returned from speaking on a television program. Police confirmed that the MP had died even when he was taken to ADK hospital.

His body was discovered by his wife at the bottom of the stairs of their apartment building just past midnight. The MP had been stabbed four times to the back of the head and a chunk of his skull had also been missing, while he had also suffered stab wounds to the chest and neck.

Unofficial reports indicate that a suspect had been taken into custody by the Police in relation to the murder. Speaking to reporters outside ADK hospital, Police Commissioner condemned the attack in the strongest terms. Riyaz revealed that President Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik who is currently on vacation in New York had asked to launch a national investigation into the incident. The Police Chief pledged to use every resource available to the Police in finding the perpetrator(s) behind the crime. He urged everyone to refrain from pointing fingers of accusation and cooperate with the Police to ensure swift justice.

The Parliament session scheduled for today has been called off following Afrasheem's murder. He is to receive a State funeral and would be buried after Asar Prayers.
