President Mohamed Waheed Hassan on Tuesday officially opened Thaa Atoll Thimarafushi airport developed by the state run Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC).

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, President Waheed said that the purpose of the airport was to provide easier means of transportation to the people.

The president assured that the airport would bring rapid development to the atoll. He further noted that the airport would contribute to the development of tourism sector in the area.

In his speech, President Waheed underscored the infrastructural development requirements that need to be undertaken to fully complete the airport.

Highlighting the importance of united effort between different governmental organisations, the president said that the airport was testimony of such effort.

The project to develop the airport in Thimarafushi with a 1,200-metre long and 30-metre wide runway was awarded to Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) last April.

MACL had subcontracted the project to MTCC for MVR32 million last May.

However, financial constraints had stalled the project at various intervals.

Finance ministry had earlier estimated MVR58 million to complete the Thimarafushi airport.

The airport will be operated by Island Aviation, which runs the Maldives national airline.

As the airport will not have a control tower, flights will only land during the day.
