Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) leader and incumbent president Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik's running mate Ahmed Thasmeen Ali on Tuesday said he will not back Waheed in the fresh polls.
President Waheed had suffered an embarrassing defeat in the first round, coming in last with only five percent of the votes.
Thasmeen had earlier announced support for former president and opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) presidential candidate Mohamed Nasheed who had registered an overwhelming majority in the now annulled first round.
Speaking to reporters after a sit-down of MDP’s national steering committee, Thasmeen said he believes that it was in the best interest of the nation to continue to back Nasheed.
He also pledged to support the ex-president to win the elections.
Waheed himself had announced support for second place candidate Abdulla Yamin in the runoff before the Supreme Court verdict.
It is yet unclear whether Waheed will contest or withdraw from the fresh polls.
President’s office had said Waheed will announce his decision sometime on Tuesday.
