Malaysian experts will analyze two pieces of new debris found in the Maldives to determine links to the missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370, Malaysian Transport Minister has said.

According to Malaysian media reports, Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said one piece was a "honeycomb material" while the other had a flat surface.

"It is very small, about the size of your hand," he said when asked to explain on the new finding on Sunday.

"The first thing we have to do is to determine if it is actually of plane material," Liow said adding that the discovery was made two days ago.

"Our team here will confirm if they belong to a plane and if a confirmation is made, the pieces will be sent to the international investigation team to determine if they are from MH370," he said.

Despite Liow’s statement, the discovery of the debris in question had not reached mainstream media attention in the Maldives.

The last possible plane debris sighting was reported from an uninhabited island in Laamu Atoll on Wednesday.

Days after a wing fragment found in Reunion Island was confirmed as part of the flaperon of the missing flight, reports had come in from across the Maldives about suspected plane debris.

A Malaysian civil aviation team had been in Maldives last week to inspect the debris.

However, Liow on Friday confirmed that most of the debris were not from a plane and were unrelated to the missing Malaysia Airline flight MH370.

"Most of the debris are negative. They are not related to MH370 and they are not plane material," Liow had said.

The Malaysia Airlines jet disappeared on March 8 last year when it inexplicably veered off course en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 239 people on board, and a colossal multinational hunt for the aircraft proved fruitless.
