The suspect Mohamed Samah, in the murder of Lance Corporal Adam Haleem has confessed to stabbing the victim with a knife at the Criminal Court today.
Adam Haleem of Kaafu Atoll Kaashidhoo, Kethi had been stabbed late in the night of July 22 while he was en-route to report for duty. Mohamed Samah, of the island’s Suvaasaage arrested over the murder had also confessed to killing Haleem during the Police investigation.
Though the trial was scheduled to commence at 2.00 this afternoon, Criminal Court had moved up the time to noon without prior notice. Hence no media outlet had been able to attend the hearing today.
The charges against Samah stated that Haleem had tried to take Samah to the police station after seeing him outside on the street while under house arrest. The suspect then had attacked Haleem with a knife with a four inch blade and stabbed the police officer near the left shoulder. Haleem had succumbed to the injuries suffered from the stabbing around 12.10 that night while receiving treatment at the health centre.
Henceforth Samah has been charged with murdering Haleem in the first degree.
Media official of the Criminal Court detailed that Samah had confessed to the murder as soon as the charges were read out in court today. However, Samah had said that the attack was not intended to be fatal but to scare Haleem, according to the media official. He had even expressed his wish to appoint an attorney, official said.
The official added that Samah had also expressed his wish to ask for forgiveness from Haleem’s family and repent.
According to the official, the statements of Haleem’s heirs would be taken during the next hearing. But the process could take a few days as the heirs of the victim needed to be confirmed through the island’s court, official said.
Following Haleem’s death, Police had detailed that Samah had been intoxicated at the time of the attack on Haleem and the incident had occurred the same night Samah had been transferred to house arrest.
