Opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) International Spokesperson and Henveiru-South MP Hamid Abdul Ghafoor has been arrested during the party's protest yesterday evening.
Police media official on Sunday said that Hamid Abdul Ghafoor was arrested for piercing the police barricades near Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA).
“We warned him and let him go as he first broke in through the police barricades. We arrested him for obstruction of police duties as he broke in again.”
In a press statement made by MDP on Saturday night, it detailed that Hamid Abdul Ghafoor and others were arrested in violation of the laws stipulated under the constitution and international covenants Maldives is party to.
“This party calls on the police to immediately cease the illegal and inhumane acts. We also strongly call upon the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) and the Police Integrity Commission to monitor these acts and put an end to them.” MDP stated.
