The Police Integrity Commission has stated that the Police had entered the Maldives National Broadcasting Corporation (MNBC) on February 7 in line with the constitution.
In a report issued by the commission today following the investigation of allegations made against the Police regarding February 6-7, the commission reached the conclusion that Police had entered MNBC in line with Article 2 and 4 of the Police Act.
It was revealed in the commission’s report that on February 7 a police contingent were sent to MNBC with the intent of protecting the place under the command of a senior commander, following reports that vandals were destroying state property within the MNBC building.
Investigation details that the first police contingent that reached the building could not enter as people surrounding the area resorted to attacking them with bricks and clubs. A second contingent then arrived at the scene and tear gas was fired into the front yard of the building through a hole in the gate using a riot gun.
“…The commission’s investigation has found that the weapon used is an authorized weapon and that Police had fired tear gas into the building assuming that more people wielding weapons may be inside ready to attack the Police on entrance. Other statements obtained by the investigation also state that clubs and other weapons were found inside the MNBC building that day and that once confirming that only employees were left in the building, the Police had left the building and did not influence broadcasts. It is also evident that no employee had been mistreated at the hands of the Police but that the Police had been rather harsh in their raid of the building,” the report states.
