Jumhoory Party leader and Maamigili constituency MP Gasim Ibrahim has accused former President Mohamed Nasheed of leading a "coup" against the State and the people of the Maldives.

Speaking during a ceremony held last night to mark the fourth anniversary of JP, Gasim stated that Nasheed lost power when he resigned after engaging in various illegitimate activities. He added that since stepping down Nasheed is staging a “coup” and also alleged that several acts of terrorism were being witnessed in the country at present.

“We have all become victim to Nasheed and his supporters due to their many acts of terrorism,” Gasim said.

Gasim also said that a Jihad in the name of Allah must be undertaken to bring an end to Nasheed’s antics.

“The time has come to undertake a Jihad in the name of Allah to protect our religion, culture and nation. Such a sacrifice must be made to restore peace and stability in the nation,” he said.

Party president Dr Ibrahim Didi in his speech noted that the achievements of JP during its infancy have been down to the cooperation of its members. He also stressed that the party does not resort to violence and acts of terrorism to secure such achievements.
