Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Chairperson, Moosa 'Reeko' Manik has said that the government of former President Mohamed Nasheed was ousted due to Nasheed's passive approach and warned to quit MDP if it happens again.

In an interview with Raajje TV, Moosa said that observing restraint and caring is important in governance however, it should be based on the situation of the society and the reaction of the people.

“Restraint and caring are attributes of our holy Prophet. It was suitable aspects at the time, however in a democratically governed environment it should be based on the society,” Moosa said.

He said that the opposition had been vile in treating (former) President Nasheed and that observing restraint over their actions had not brought about a positive outcome. He added that he had previously suggested strict action to be taken against these people.

“These so-called religious scholars like Sheikh Ilyas, even as they called for our heads, we chose to show restraint. But if we treated them strictly, maybe the outcome would have turned out differently,” Moosa said.

Speaking about how he got in to politics, Moosa said that former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom was a ruthless ruler and that the present President Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik has also followed suit.
