President of the Football Association of Maldives (FAM) Ali Azim has confirmed to Haveeru that the friendly football match Sri Lanka and Maldives has now been scheduled to be played in Colombo on June 14.

The match organized for the official opening of the new stadium in Sri Lanka, had been delayed as the work on the stadium had not been completed as scheduled.

However, FAM had failed to confirm the participation of the Maldives national team even as the match had been postponed as the fixtures of the local ‘Dhivehi league’ needed to be revised in order to facilitate the friendly match.

Azim had earlier stated that in light of the cordial relations between the two countries, FAM would do everything possible to facilitate the request from Sri Lanka.

The last time the two countries faced off against each other in Sri Lanka was back in 2009 in a friendly which ended in a 1-1 draw.
