Gemanafushi constituency MP Ilham Ahmed on Saturday night was elected as president of the Football Association of Maldives (FAM).
Ilham was elected after a closely fought contest with former president Ali Azim.
During the first round of voting, Ilham received eight votes while Azim secured four votes. The other candidate Abdul Muhusin Hameed contesting for the post received no votes. As no single candidate received the mandatory nine votes to be elected, a second round of votes had to be taken. During the second round, Ilham was elected with nine votes.
"This is a major victory for me," Ilham said after the election.
"This victory was made possible by the confidence and assistance given from the heads of the clubs."
Azim was elected as the first ever president of FAM in 2008. Meanwhile Mohamed Rasheed lost out to Muhusin for the FAM Vice President post by eight votes to two.
