Criminal Court claimed today that the conclusion of the trial on lawyer Ahmed Najeeb's murder has been delayed as some events of the case still remained unclear.
State has charged Ahmed Murrath, 29 of Maafannu Masroora and Fathimath Hana, 18 of Shaviyani Atoll Goidhoo Rihaab with murder in the first degree.
Both suspects had confessed to Najeeb’s stabbing murder in court earlier.
The hearings on the case have been concluded and the Judge presiding over the case during the last hearing had stated that a verdict would be delivered sometime this week. However, the Judge had not specified an exact date.
Media official of the Criminal Court claimed that the conclusion of the trial had been delayed as some events of the case have not yet been confirmed. Official added that efforts were underway to wrap up the trial before the end of the week.
The verdict was originally scheduled to be delivered last Thursday. However, as one heir of Najeeb who lives abroad had not signed the statement given to the court and due to a change made to the table of the section handling the case, the verdict was delayed until this week.
Court had earlier taken the statements of all eight heirs of Najeeb, where all had asked the Court for the death penalty.
Najeeb’s body was discovered on the night of July 1, in a room in the first floor of Masroora. His body had been dumped in a large garbage can inside the room, which the police claimed in court was occupied by the unmarried Hana and Murrath.
According to Murrath’s confession, he had stabbed Najeeb in the neck.
