President to speak at OIC meeting tonight

The President's Office has announced that President Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik will be speaking at the extraordinary meeting of the Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC) tonight.

Along with President Waheed, Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Abdu Samad Abdulla and Minister for Islamic Affairs Sheikh Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed are also taking part in the meeting.

Four main issues are to be discussed in this emergency meeting with top priority being given to the unrest in Syria. The Foreign Ministry of the Maldives had expressed concerned at the country’s authorities for its failure to establish peace and provide protection to its citizens.

The Maldives has also condemned the acts of terrorism being carried out in Syria. Furthermore the Maldives was also the co-sponsor of the resolution that was approved by the United Nations (UN) General Assembly on August 3 along with Saudi Arabia.

The OIC meeting began at 1:30 in the morning local time and the meeting was chaired by Saudi King Abdulla Bin Abdul Azeez.

The Palestine crisis, ethnic violence against Burmese muslims and the unrest in Mali are also set to be discussed during the meeting.
