President Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik revealed today that efforts are ongoing to secure an extra credit line facility to ease the present budget woes of the country.
Speaking with regard to the visit to participate in the extraordinary summit of the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC), President said that discussions had been held to obtain assistance for budget support during his visit to Saudi Arabia.
“I’m really hopeful that it will be arranged. I also hope that we will get funding for water, sanitation and harbor projects. We just have to dispatch some relevant documents pertaining to the projects,” President said in response to a question from Haveeru.
He also added that he had held discussions with some of his counterparts during the summit to obtain assistance for the various development projects in the Maldives.
President Waheed revealed hope that the better part of the funding would be received from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Qatar.
“The result of such visits depends on how good our follow up is. The outcome would be as desired if we send the necessary documents once we return. Hence we hope to complete that process in the next few days,” he said.
President detailed that he had met the heads of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Jordon and Malaysia.
Maldives had backed the move during the summit to suspend Syria from the OIC. President added that the Maldives had echoed the call for the immediate end to the atrocities being committed against the Syrian people by the current regime.
