The Workday Charity Open has turned into a ball-striking party, and only the best iron players in the world are invited. Collin Morikawa leads at 13 under, but just behind him are Justin Thomas (-10), Hideki Matsuyama (-9) and Viktor Hovland (-8). That is quite a group elite tee-to-green players, and they’ll be battling a tougher course than we’ve seen over the first four weeks of the PGA Tour’s return amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Muirfield Village ejected Brooks Koepka, Jordan Spieth, Justin Rose and Bubba Watson over the first two rounds, and it has the ability to do the same over the final 36 holes. Because of a few weather delays on Friday, the late tee times in Round 2 will finish their rounds early on Saturday before the third round gets started. That means the leaders like Morikawa and Thomas will have a lengthy wait until they tee it up in the afternoon with a trophy on the line. For Morikawa, this is a big-time opportunity to solidify his name as a star on the PGA Tour. For others — like Thomas and Hideki Matsuyama — it’s an opportunity to add another win to the growing collection of them.
