Rubio: Chinese consulate in Houston was 'massive spy center'

Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., tweeted his support Wednesday for the shuttering of a Chinese consulate in Houston, boasting that spying activity was carried out as a result of the facility.

The U.S. directed the closure of the consulate on Tuesday. The Chinese governing administration said Wednesday morning that they experienced been instructed to do so with no warning, but Rubio claims the move was “extended overdue.”

#China’s Houston consulate is a significant spy middle, forcing it to shut is very long overdue,” he reported, describing it as a “central node” of the Chinese Communist Party’s spy functions.

“This necessary to materialize,” he tweeted.

China identified as the closure an “unprecedented escalation” by the United States and threatened to retaliate, according to the South China Morning Post.

“China demands the U.S. revoke the wrong choice. If the U.S. went ahead, China would get necessary countermeasures,” mentioned Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin.

State Office spokesperson Morgan Ortagus claimed in a statement to Fox News that the closure directive was issued “to safeguard American intellectual property and Americans’ private information and facts.”

The U.S. “will not tolerate the PRC’s violations of our sovereignty and intimidation of our persons, just as we have not tolerated the PRC’s unfair trade practices, theft of American work opportunities, and other egregious conduct,” she added. “President Trump insists on fairness and reciprocity in U.S.-China relations.”
