Top Catalan politician accuses Spain of 'political spying'

Roger Torrent has called for an investigation into the alleged spying

A top Catalan professional-independence politician has accused the Spanish federal government of spying on his cellular mobile phone.

Roger Torrent, speaker of the Catalan parliament, spoke out soon after specifics of the alleged espionage had been discovered in a joint investigation by the Guardian and El Pais newspapers.

Mr Torrent explained it was proof of “political spying in opposition to political opponents” in Spain.

Madrid has denied the allegations.

The Guardian and El Pais newspapers reported that Mr Torrent experienced been warned that his cell phone was focused previous 12 months making use of Pegasus, an Israeli-designed spyware tool.

The makers of the software say it is only marketed to governments to monitor criminals and terrorists.

Mr Torrent was warned about the adware by scientists working with WhatsApp.

Talking on Tuesday, Mr Torrent called for a whole investigation into what happened.

“This is the first time that we have concrete confirmation of what many of us understood and had been denouncing… We understood that unlawful procedures were being getting directed towards the independence lead to. Now we have specified evidence,” he reported.

The office environment of Spanish Primary Minister Pedro Sánchez denied the accusations.

A spokeswoman instructed AFP news agency the govt was not conscious that Mr Torrent and another former Catalan lawmaker “had been subjected to a hacking attack by means of their mobile telephones”.

“In Spain, any intervention about a cellular mobile phone is usually carried out lawfully,” she explained.

Catalonia’s drive for independence has plunged Spain into its largest political crisis in 40 years. The region experienced its autonomy suspended for almost 7 months by Madrid after a failed bid to crack absent in 2017.
