Tropical Storm Fay is soaking the US Northeast and is predicted to make landfall Friday or right away

20 named storms predicted for hurricane season, the most since 2005

As of 8 a.m., Fay’s middle was about 90 miles south of Cape May, New Jersey, with greatest sustained winds of 50 mph, moving north, the Nationwide Weather Service explained.

Rain and wind will have an affect on major US metropolitan areas — including Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia and New York — at several factors Friday, CNN Meteorologist Chad Myers stated.

About 2 to 4 inches of rain, with isolated quantities of about 7 inches, are forecast, bringing a risk of flash flooding from coastal Maryland and Delaware into southern New England on Friday.

Also, winds of 40 to 50 mph may strike pieces of the coastline, and seaside erosion also may perhaps be an challenge.

A tropical storm warning has been issued for the coasts of Delaware, New Jersey, New York — including New York City and Prolonged Island — Connecticut and aspect of Rhode Island.

The warning suggests that tropical storm problems, which includes sustained winds of at least 39 mph, are predicted someplace in just the warning region.

Landfall — envisioned to be over New Jersey — could occur from late Friday afternoon to someday right away.

“We are going to see some trees down. We’re heading to see some electric power strains down. Probably a small little bit of seaside erosion, and that significant, heavy rainfall,” Myers reported.

By 9 a.m., the barrier peninsula community of Ocean Town, Maryland, had been given far more than 4 inches of rain in 3 hours.

Fay shaped off North Carolina’s coast Thursday. It is the earliest tropical storm that begins with an “F” on record. The previous file was set on July 21, 2005.

“Close to 6 o’clock tonight, that will be the worst temperature you get in New York Town. By 11 o’clock … that temperature gets into Boston, Connecticut, all the way as a result of New Hampshire and Vermont,” Myers stated.

CNN’s Judson Jones contributed to this report.
