The 146th running of the Kentucky Derby will take place later than usual this year due to the coronavirus pandemic. However, punters will be delighted that it will still be going ahead on September 5th.

The field is beginning to take shape through the 2020 Road to the Kentucky Derby points system. There are many competitors trying to join the hall of fame of the famous race. However, is there already a standout contender for the Triple Crown event?

Hard To Bet Against Tiz The Law

The three-year-old trained by Barclay Tagg is the leading contender in the field having impressed throughout the season to this point. He has recorded three consecutive successes so far in 2020, with the first of those coming in February at Gulfstream Park. On that against Tiz The Law breezed to victory by three lengths from Ete Indien. That opening success of the year was followed up by another success at Gulfstream Park against Shivaree.

However, the three-year-old’s most impressive victory came in his last outing as he roared to victory in the Belmont Stakes. Tagg will be hoping that this success would be the catalyst for a second Triple Crown win of the season, but the field is much more difficult. On that occasion, he was able to breeze to victory by three and three-quarter lengths from Dr Post, but it’s unlikely he will be that commanding against in the Kentucky Derby.

Leading Opposition To Tiz The Law

There are a number of horses that will appeal to punters in the rest of the field available in the ante-post markets. Honor A.P may be the leader of those chances after impressing earlier this year in the Santa Anita Derby. That success for the three-year-old was an impressive display, as he was finally able to get revenge on Authentic. There is quite a rivalry appearing between the two horses, with Authentic having won the previous head to head between the pair in the San Felipe Stakes. That defeat for Honor A.P is one of only two that he has suffered, which also means it is difficult to overlook Authentic.

The three-year-old trained by Bob Baffert has been in excellent form this year, as he has won three of his four starts. The only defeat was that one in the Santa Anita Derby. However, he returned to form recently in the TVG.com Haskell Stakes at Monmouth Park. It was a narrow success, as he won by a nose from Traffic. But, it’s hard to rule him out for being one of the leading chances in this race. It certainly helps his chances that Baffert has trained two winning horses in this race in the previous five years.

Runners That Could Spring A Shock

There is value all around the market in the betting, but two horses that will certainly have a chance in the Kentucky Derby if they are involved are Uncle Chuck and Mischevious Alex. Uncle Chuck has only raced twice this year, with both ending in victories. The Los Alamitos Derby was his last outing as he was able to outlast Thousand Words. However, Uncle Chuck will likely race once more before deciding on whether the Kentucky Derby will be the route that it will take.

Mischevious Alex is another one that punters will be keeping a close eye on, as there have been glimpses of a very special horse. Those glimpses came at Gulfstream Park and Aqueduct earlier in the year, as the three-year-old was able to beat Shivaree and Untitled respectively. However, his performance last time out in the Woody Stephens Stakes does race cause for concern.

The John Servis-trained horse could only finish fourth on that occasion, which was over five lengths behind the winner. However, form earlier in the season ensures that he is still a contender. Still, the preference for the winner of the Kentucky Derby would be Authentic.
